Why does plaster crack?

Plaster cracks from building settlement, vibration, moisture, and the natural aging of old lath and plaster. Hairline cracks are usually cosmetic, while wide or recurring cracks can signal movement or a loose plaster key. We find the cause, re anchor or patch the area, then skim coat so the repair holds.

Can you repair plaster, or does it need full replacement?

Most plaster can be repaired rather than replaced. We re anchor loose sections, fill cracks and holes, and skim coat the surface smooth. Full replacement is only needed where the plaster has failed across a large area or the lath behind it is damaged.

Can you match old plaster to a smooth finish?

Yes. We skim coat the repaired area and feather it into the surrounding wall so the patch disappears under paint. For walls with a texture, we match the existing pattern, and for a modern look we finish the whole surface smooth.

Plaster repair FAQ

Plaster is a wet material trowelled over lath in layers and is common in older buildings. Drywall is a manufactured gypsum panel that is screwed up and taped. We repair plaster in place and can also transition a plaster wall to a drywall patch where that makes more sense.

Yes. Recurring cracks usually mean movement or a loose plaster key rather than a surface problem. We re anchor the plaster, reinforce the crack with tape and compound, and skim coat so it does not reopen the way a simple fill would.

Yes. We repair lath and plaster ceilings, re anchoring loose areas and patching failed sections, then skim coat smooth. Where a ceiling is too far gone, we can replace the failed area with drywall and blend it into the surrounding plaster.

A well executed repair is feathered well past the patch and skim coated to match the surrounding wall, so it disappears under paint. For a uniform result on a damaged wall, finishing or repainting the full surface gives the cleanest look.

Most plaster repairs take one to a few days, with extra time for the compound to dry between coats and before paint. After the site visit we give a written schedule with the estimate so the timeline is clear up front.
