Drywall Texture Matching

Matching of knockdown, orange peel, stipple, and hand applied wall and ceiling textures so repairs and additions blend in seamlessly.

Texture matching recreates the existing wall or ceiling texture over a repair or new section so the patch disappears into the surrounding surface. Pristine Drywall matches knockdown, orange peel, stipple, and hand applied textures for property managers, general contractors, and developers. Every match is tested on the spot, then applied and feathered so the repair blends under paint.

The details

Texture matching questions, answered

How do you match an existing texture?

We identify the texture type and grade, mix the compound to the right consistency, and spray or hand apply a test patch first. Once the test matches, we apply the texture over the repair and feather the edges into the surrounding surface so the patch disappears under paint.

Which textures can you match?

We match the common sprayed and hand applied finishes: knockdown, orange peel, splatter, stipple, stomp, swirl, and trowel textures. We can also blend a repair into a smooth Level 4 or Level 5 wall where there is no texture at all.

Why does a texture repair sometimes still show?

A patch shows when the texture grade, sheen, or paint does not match, or when the edges are not feathered. We test the match before applying, blend well past the repair, and prime so the area takes paint evenly and the patch disappears.

Questions

Texture matching FAQ

We match almost any sprayed or hand applied texture, including knockdown, orange peel, splatter, stipple, stomp, swirl, and trowel finishes. Very old or unusual hand textures take a few test patches to dial in, which we do before applying anything to the wall.

Knockdown is a sprayed texture that is partly flattened with a wide blade once it starts to set, leaving a mottled, low profile pattern. It is one of the most common wall and ceiling textures in newer buildings, and one of the easiest for us to match on a repair.

A well matched texture is invisible once painted. The patch shows only when the grade, sheen, or paint differs, or the edges are not feathered, which is why we test the match and blend well past the repair before priming and painting.

Yes. We match ceiling textures the same way we match walls, including stipple, knockdown, and sprayed finishes, and can also scrape and refinish a ceiling smooth where a match is not the goal.

Texture matching itself is quick once the patch is ready, but the repair, drying time, and paint set the overall schedule. After the site visit we give a written timeline with the estimate so you know what to expect.
